Arena Football is an idea that was conceived by none other than the famous NFL promoter Jim Foster. He devised a set of rules for the sport and managed to get NBC onboard. The first ever Arena Football game took place on 27th April, 1986 at the Rockford MetroCentre. The two teams squaring off were Chicago Politicians and Rockford Metros. The match was a big success and that paved the way for Arena Football to commence.
Pittsburgh is one of the four chartered AFL cities. The city's first team was named Pittsburgh Gladiators and they joined teams from Washington, Chicago and Denver to kick start Arena football for the first time. Not only that but the first game in sport's history was played at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh as well when the home team the Gladiators took on the Commandos from Washington.
The Civic Centre was also selected as the venue for the first every AFL championship game. The Gladiators however played for only four seasons before they were moved to Tampa. Pittsburgh remained without an AFL team for around two decades and that changed when former NFL legend and Pittsburgh's own Lynn Swann decided to do something about it.
Matt Shaner then came onboard as the main owner and became the general manager as well. Swann and Shaner's father Lance joined him to complete the ownership team. They went to work and the Pittsburgh Power were incepted in the year 2010. They made their AFL debut in the year 2011 as members of the American Conference's East Division.
The long wait of over two decades came to an end with the arrival of the Pittsburgh Power on the landscape. They played a total of eighteen games during their debut season and went on to win nine games. The second year didn't go according to the plan and their form suffered with the team winning only five games. It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Power however that season. They came back from a forty eight to seventeen points deficit against the Orlando Predators to win the game by a score of 57-54. It still remains the most epic comeback in AFL history.
Pittsburgh Power are looking to make their mark on the sport and who knows they might end up doing that this season. If you are a fan of this upcoming side then this is your chance to grab Pittsburgh Power tickets and make your way to the arena to catch then show their skills live.
