Philadelphia Union

Sons of Ben was a supporter group who wanted a team from Philadelphia to play in the Major League Soccer or the MLS. The group started advocating that Philadelphia had a big enough fan-base for soccer and that an expansion team would be a good idea and a smart business investment.


The group achieved success and in 2008, Philadelphia was added as the sixteenth team to compete in the MLS. The club was financed by a total sum of forty-seven million dollars that were given by Delaware Country politiciansand Ed Rendell. The money was to be spent on building the ‘PPL Park’. The PPL Park is where the Philadelphia Union plays its home games and the stadium can seat over eighteen thousand fans.


The Union agreed to make affiliations with Reading Rage Youth Soccer Club. This ensured that there was a steady flow of young talent into the club so it did not have to spend too much on transfers.


Philadelphia Union played its first game on 25^th March 2010 and sadly lost to the ‘Seattle Sounders’. Their home game, the first one, brought them a victory against ‘D.C United’. The first game at the ‘PPL Park’ was 3-1 victory over Seattle Sounders FC. The club was going successful as all the season tickets were sold even before the season started.


The Unionsplay in a navy blue and gold colored kit and the logo is a rattlesnake. The rattlesnake pays tribute to a cartoon by Benjamin Franklin that was published in the ‘Pennsylvania Gazette’. Although Philadelphia Union play at the PPL Park most of the time, in order to accommodate a bigger number of fans, the bigger games are played at the Lincoln Financial Field. The ‘New York Red Bulls’ and ‘D.C United’ have developed rivalries with the club and most obvious reason is that they are located close together geographically.


Philadelphia Union has shown great prospect and have even managed to get a sponsorship deal with ‘Bimbo Bakeries USA’. The sponsorship deal, estimated to be worth around 12 million will help the club financially. The team is going strong and put up a great performance in its first season. The players showed immense talent and skills on the field, promising great future for the club.
