In 1893 a, Penn and Princeton one-mile relay race competition was held where four runners representing each school participated. This very race was not the first of its kind; numerous races of similar nature and style were a part of Penn’s local sporting culture. There was a need to make it more mainstream hence two years later, the Penn Relays inaugurated as a series of relay races. They were held in April as a single day event allowing eight colleges, two high schools and six prep schools to send sixty plus participants to become a part of a set of eight races. Harvard and Penn were the two schools who contested against each other in the mile relay; Harvard came out triumphant as the first to ace the Penn Relays.
The success of the Penn Relays amongst participants and spectators pushed the Penn's track committee to make Penn Relays a regular event. The Franklin Field became the home stadium and the dedicated landmark for this event. Over a century of Penn Relays history boasts of very interesting participation, records and associations that its has developed with everyone involved. The participation of elite runners time and again has allowed record attendances to happen. Every year the Penn Relay returns to be bigger and better than before.
