Road to Popularity
Suffering a temporary set back in Europe in its initial days Boxing resurfaced and gained popularity in the early 1700's in England. During his time James Figg, held the heavyweight title from 1719-1730. He also trained many boxers. One of them was Jack Broughton, who after becoming the next champion spelt out his own set of rules for the sport including outlawing of hitting below the belt. In 1866 Marquess of Queensberry established the Queensberry Rules of Boxing.
These new rules which are all part of modern boxing included
- Bare-knuckle boxing officially ended and boxing gloves were required to be used.
- Limiting the number of 3-minute rounds.
- Eliminated some of the grappling that had previously been a part of the sport.
Boxing in Modern Olympics
Initially boxing was considered too violent for inclusion at the first modern Olympics in 1896. Alongside Basketball, Boxing entered into the modern Olympics in St. Louis in 1904 but only as a demonstration sport, with U.S. the only country to enter a team resultantly they team won all the matches. Boxing become a permanent Olympic sport in 1920 in Antwerp for only male boxers. Since its inclusion some of the most memorable champions in Olympic history include Cassius Clay, George Foreman, Oscar De La Hoya and Teofilo Stevenson. Women's official boxing first appeared in 1993 but have not been yet included in the official Olympic program.
Boxers Weight Classification
There are a total of 12 different weight classes from light flyweight (48kg or about 106 pounds) to super heavyweight (over 91kg or 200 pounds). The boxers are, are paired off after a random draw and compete in a single elimination tournament. Unlike most other events, two bronze medals are awarded in boxing. One goes to each of the two semifinal bout losers.
Scoring Points
Boxers can only score by hitting an opponent on the front or side of the head or upper body. Points are awarded by a panel of five judges sitting on four sides of the ring. To the aid of judges as well as to ensure impartiality an electronic scoring system is used and point is only awarded when three of the five judges agree and hit the button within a second of each other. The winner is decided on the basis of most points scored by adding the points awarded by all the majority of judges. The tie is decided through the judges' vote on boxers' style and quality of the game especially defensive skills. No additional points are awarded for a knockdown, however, the session is halted if a fighter is down three times in one round or four times during the fight.
Some interesting rules of Olympic boxing are
- The age of an Olympic boxer can be anywhere between 17 to 34 years.
- The fighters cannot have beards.
- Moustaches can be no longer than the upper lip.
The Beijing Games
It will be the last time when only males will participate in the boxing as the women's event has been added for the 2012 London Games. Competition in 2008 will be held at the Worker's Indoor Arena in eastern Beijing which was built in 1991, renovated for the games and now has the capacity of accommodating up to 13,000 fans.
