University of Oklahoma is represented for a variety of sports by 19 varsity teams known as Oklahoma Sooners. The sports activities are not confined to men only but include games for women as well. Coming on to gymnastics, Oklahoma Sooners has excelled in the sport in both college tournaments as well as in national championships with the recent ones in 2005 and 2006. Under the training of the exceptionally talented coach Mark Williams, it has won four of the past five NCAA championships contended.

At present the athletics department at the university is managed by Joe Castiglione and is ranked at 3rd position for being the Best College Sports Program in America by the Sports Illustrated.
