The Huskies is the collective term for the 17 varsity teams (7 men, 10 women) representing the Northern Illinois University, based in DeKalb, Illinois. The teams play in the Mid-American Conference at NCAA Division I level, having earlier been part of Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Big West Conference and Division I-A Independent through their history. Northern Illinois University is situated in DeKalb, Illinois, a city based in DeKalb County. Named after a Revolutionary War hero of German origin, the city has a population of 39,000. Northern Illinois Huskies started out in 1899, five years after the university's formation. Huskie Stadium was opened in 1965, replacing Glidden Field. Dave Doeren has been entrusted with coaching the Huskies football team after Jerry Kill's sudden departure last year. Famous football players inducted into the Huskies Hall of Fame include Gene Belz, Steve Hirsch and George Acker, while basketball has Larry Jackson and T.J. Lux.
Northern Illinois Huskies football have notched up nine conference titles, with all but the 1983 Mid-American Conference title coming in the Interstate or Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They were also MAC West Division champions in 2005 and 2010. The Huskies men's basketball team has four conference tournament championships, and seven regular season conference championships. Baseball has two NCAA Tournament appearances (1972, 1996), having suffered from the program's disbanding from 1983 to 1990.
