Partnership with School District 18
Our special partnership with School District 18 enabled the Varsity Reds to connect with more than 5,000 K-5 students through the Heads Up with the Reds and Read with the Reds programs which provide the children and our athletes with quality experiences. The Varsity Reds offer seven different sports and high performance opportunities for more than 200 student-athletes at UNB. We currently operate from several venues on campus. Cheer the Varsity Reds Basketball, Volleyball and Wrestling teams as they compete at the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium. The swim team competes in the same building at the Sir Max Aitken Pool while the cross - country team calls Odell Park home. If soccer is your sport to watch, then catch the teams in action on our new turf facility, Chapman Field, which is located at the top of the campus just below the Aitken Centre. The Aitken Centre is also where the Varsity Reds men's and women's hockey teams compete.
Basketball - Men
MEN'S BASKETBALL SHIFTS TO HIGH GEAR
The pre-season is well under way and with seven returning Varsity Reds players in the line up Coach Gillespie has secured a solid base of experience and talent for his team. Colin Swift, Thor Jenson, Colton Wilson, Joel Little, Danya Bubar, Jonathan Maxwell and Mike Anderson make up the veteran squad for this season. Joining the team as transfer student athletes are Jeff VanDolla from UNBC, James Ourom out of Capalano College and Alex DesRoches hailing from Mathieu Martin High School. Women are heavy into pre-season training and practice.
Five new players come to the Varsity Reds roster giving it a dynamic range of talent and depth with which to compete. The transfer of Emma Russell from CBU is great addition to the team and despite not being able to play this season for the Reds she already demonstrates great leadership and skill. A college transfer from BC, Tashina VanBlack, is a great athlete and will be an important ingredient in the Red's play.
Three high school graduates help to round out the new people. Christine Ryan who played AAA for Riverview in Moncton led her team to the high school finals. Jillian Sipprell from Carlton North is coming off an AA championship season and Katelyn Foster hailing from Grand Manan and a provincial A championship.
Men's Soccer ranked in CIS Top TenThe start to the 2007-2008 season was filled with energy and enthusiasm as the men faced off against Mount Allison University and the University de Moncton this past weekend. In their first match against U de Monctom they focused on coming together as a team and despite having a mixed result in a 0-0 tie, Coach Miles Pinset believes there were exciting things happening on the pitch that should be a preface to upcoming matches.
