The New Britain Rock Cats and the Portland Sea Dogs have a total of seven division titles between them. While the Sea Dogs have won five titles in the Eastern Division, the Rock Cats have won two titles so far. The Sea Dogs completed a hat-trick when they won the division title in 1997. They won a couple of more titles in 2005 and 2006, and advanced to the playoffs. Their previous attempts in the post-season had fallen short of winning the league, but in 2006 the Sea Dogs finally lifted their first minor league title. The Rock Cats, on the other hand, won their two division titles in 1998 and 2001. They were declared the MiLB co-champions in 2001, when the playoff series was cut short.
The New Britain Rock Cats' origins can be traced back to the sixties, when they started as Double-A affiliate team of the Boston Red Sox. For four years, from 1965 to 1969, the team was based in Massachusetts, after which they moved to Rhode Island. In 1973 the team moved to Bristol and was named the Bristol Red Sox. Their move to New Britain came at the start of the 1983 season when they settled in the Beehive Field. The Boston Red Sox wanted the New Britain Red Sox, to move back to Massachusetts since it was closer to their fan base. However the owner of the New Britain team, Joe Buzas, opposed the move. It resulted in the Boston Red Sox ending their affiliation with the team. The New Britain team aligned themselves with the Trenton Thunders in 1994 and in 1995 with the Minnesota Twins.
The Portland Sea Dogs were formed in 1992 when Dan Burke filed an application for a team representing Portland. After the request was processed Portland was included in the final list that could get the franchise. In March 1993, Portland's new team was named the Sea Dogs.
Guy Gilchrist, a famous cartoonist, designed the logos for the Sea Dogs and the Rock Cats. Get New Britain Rock Cats vs Portland Sea Dogs tickets and watch the two teams battle it out at the New Britain Stadium.
