NHRA Carolina Nationals are being hosted by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). It is the governing body which formulates rules for the drag racing competitions in both Canada and the United States. Its rosters consist of eighty thousand drivers of which only five percent are professional drivers. This makes it one of the largest sanctioning bodies of motorsports in the world. The association was formed in 1951 by Wally Parks, a hobbyist and an automobile writer. NHRA organized and legitimized the sport of drag racing. Its first nationwide tournament took place in the year 1955 in Kansas on training air field that was constructed during World War II. From that year onwards, the sports gained immense popularity. Adding to its popularity were Wally Parks’s magazines, Hot Rod and Motor Trend.

Now, the main events of NHRA are called the “Nationals”. They are twenty two in number and are held throughout the year in different parts of America. NHRA Carolina Nationals fall in the top racing category of NHRA called the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. The series consist of four classes of racing. They are: Top Fuel Dragster introduced in the 1950s, Funny Car introduced in 1966, Pro Stock in 1970, and Pro Stock Motorcycle in 1987. Top Fuel and Funny Car races consist of races with speeds reaching 300 miles per hour. Their track is limited to a three hundred meter distance for safety reasons as the chances of cars blowing up increases when the speeds reach the 300 mile per hour mark. The average time of the race is 4.42 to 5 seconds. In Pro Stock, the speed reach 211 miles per hour and the average time is 6.5-6.7 seconds. Pro Stock Motorcycle races reach speeds of over 190 miles per hour and the average time ranges between 7 and 6 seconds.
