The league's creator, Ambrose O'Brien, said that the new league required a French-Canadian team in order to create a natural rivalry with the Montreal Wanderers and the Montreal Shamrocks. Jimmy Gardiner, the NHA's other founder, recommended that O'Brien name the team the Canadiens. The Canadiens and another four other NHA teams opted out of the NHA. They formed the NHL in 1917. This decision came from a long-running dispute with Blue Shirts owner Eddie Livingstone.

The Canadiens' stars (Morenz and Joliat) were phased out by the early 1930s. Their performances were far from impressive, and this led to the NHL giving the Habs the rights to all French Canadian players for 2 years. Morenz suffered multiple fractures of his leg and died on January 28, 1937. he developed blood clots in his fractured leg which caused a stroke. 1967 was a momentous year for the country.
