The MLS All Star is a fantastic soccer exhibition game. Major League Soccer was incepted as a result of FIFA awarding United States the right to host the World Cup in the year 1994. Initial plans consisted of MLS kicking-off its inaugural season in 1995 but the plan was delayed for one more year. The arrival of a professional soccer league to scene generated a lot of interest and the sport started to get much needed boost.
As is the tradition in North American sports, it was decided that an All Star game will be played every year as well. The format consisted of two soccer sides from the Western and Eastern conference’s squaring-off against one another. The Giants Stadium was selected as the host venue for that first ever MLS All Star game. The match itself was a true spectacle. In what was a high scoring game East came out on top by three goals to two.
Numerous changes were made to the format of the game over subsequent years. In 1998, the USA side took on an MLS World team. The home team won the game by six goals to one. The format reverted to East versus West for the next three years.
Some more changes were made before management decided to invite an international club team to take on an MLS All Star team starting 2005. That year English Premier League club Fulham made the trip to the U.S. to take on an MLS All Star side. The United States team won the game by a score of four goals to one.
Chelsea then came over next year and were beaten 1-0. Celtic and West Ham United were visitors for the next two years and both of them came up short as well. Everton then ventured over and became the first overseas team to beat the MLS All Star. It was a 1-1 draw in normal time so penalties were taken to decide the winner that the English Club won by 4-3.
Manchester United then became the first English team to beat the MLS All Star contingent over normal time when they triumphed by five goals to two in 2010. The same team won 4-0 next year too. Chelsea were visitors in 2012 and were on the receiving end of a 3-2 loss.
Italian giants AS Roma will make the trip this time around to become the first club from Italy to take part in this wonderful game. It will be another intriguing contest between two different styles. So book your MLS All Star tickets and catch it live.
