Minnesota United FC, nicknamed The Loons and United, were formed in 2010 and play at the twelve thousand capacity National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota. The franchise's owner is Bill McGuire and Manny Lagos is their Head Coach. Based in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area, the team has some of the most loyal supporters in the NASL.
In just a year after its founding, United FC emerged as the 2011 NASL League Champion, which was a major achievement. The franchise's official colors are grey, sky blue and black. United's first game was against the Vancouver Whitecaps, followed by a game against the Carolina Railhawks. They defeated the latter by 1–0 and would go on to defeat FC Tampa Bay by 3–1 and AC St Louis by 3–0 during their debut season.
United's second season in the NASL saw it defeat the Tampa Bay Rowdies by 1–0 in the quarterfinals and then face the Carolina Railhawks for a 4–4 draw. They went on to win the final game 3–1, and took home the NASL Championship. Their main rivalry is with FC Edmonton and is celebrated in the Flyover Cup.
Founded in 1970, the original New York Cosmos played until 1985. During the 2013 season, a new team began playing under the same name, thus carrying on the rich heritage of one of the most popular soccer clubs in New York. A powerhouse during the early days of the North American Soccer League, the Cosmos are one of the most formidable franchises around.
The older Cosmos played at the Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey and was one of the strongest teams in the NASL during the seventies and eighties. It was home to famous international soccer players like the legendary Franz Beckenbauer from West Germany, Giorgio Chinaglia from Italy and Pele from Brazil. The inclusion such illustrious names led to the team being called 'the most glamorous team in world soccer'.
The Cosmos are credited with contributing to the development of soccer in the US, which had been largely ignored until then. After the team disbanded during the late eighties, efforts were made to reincarnate it, often as a Major League Soccer franchise. However, Pinton, owner of the naming rights, refused to sell the name to the Major League Soccer, fearing that the heritage of the team would not be honored. In 2009, however, rights were sold to a group led by none other than the legendary Pele, with the team starting off in 2013. In this upcoming game, you can sense them play live with Minnesota United FC vs New York Cosmos tickets.
