Here we are going to discuss about a popular boxer from Puerto Rico. Miguel Angel Cotto is a name of that player and he was born on October 29, 1980 in the town of Caguas, Puerto Rico. He is a former WBO light welterweight champion and is the current WBA welterweight champion. Cotto has been ranked seventh on The Ring magazine's pound-for-pound list at present.

He is an amateur player, and he has represented Puerto Rico in the lightweight and light welterweight divisions at various international events, which include the 1999 Pan American Games, the 2000 Summer Olympics and the 1998 Junior World Championships where he won a silver medal.

Cotto had begun his professional boxing career in the year of 200. The first breakthrough came in his life, when he had defeated Kelson Pinto for the WBO junior welterweight championship of 2004. Later he has successfully defended the title successfully a total of six times. On his first match on this division he defeated Carlos Quintana for the vacant WBA welterweight championship. Cotto has defeated the players like Oktay Urkal, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, and Alfonso Gomez, during the career.

He was born and raised in Caguas, there were many personalities in his family related with the game of boxing. It included his father Miguel Cotto Sr., his brother Jose Miguel Cotto, his second cousin Abner Cotto and his uncle and boxing trainer Evangelista Cotto. He is married to Melissa Guzman with whom he has two children, Alondra and Miguel Cotto III. He had a child custody case with another woman for his daughter outside of his legal marriage.

Cotto used to go to the Bairoa Gym in Caguas, when he was a mere child. He had a chance to develop into a top amateur fighter, due to the early training. Cotto had faces a serious in the year of 2001, it almost cost his boxing career. The accident occurred, during a drive to the gymnasium at 5 a.m. in the morning one day; he really fell asleep and had an accident, which broke his arm and requiring hospitalization.

His first fight in the year of 2004, during the fourth round was a knockout victory over the former world title contender Victoriano Sosa. This was after an eventful week prior to the fight, which included Cotto having to wait four hours for his luggage to arrive at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. There he was almost removed from the Mandalay Bay Hotel, where he had a fight with a security guard, who thought he was an unaccompanied minor.

Cotto had received a personal misery, when his friend and former 2004 Olympian Joseph Serrano, was shot in the head upon leaving the Bairoa gym. Serrano survived the shot, but was in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. Later, Cotto's achievements are numerous, as he keeps on fighting under different categories for titles.
