Loyola University Chicago basketball team is particularly recognized for breaking the racial boundaries set for NCAA men’s basketball games. The men’s basketball team of the early 1960s that was coached by George Ireland featured four black players although the rule at that time was limited to only three black players. The credit for breaking the long standing tradition that set racial differences by limiting the number of black players that could play in a team is given to the team of the time. Another achievement by them was when Loyola played against Wyoming and defeated the white team with their all black team. This was the year of 1962.
The 1963 NCAA Championship was a turning point that marked a change in the NCCA Championship history. It was the time when Loyola Chicago Ramblers were to play against Mississippi State University and the Governor barred the school to play against Loyola’s black players. Despite the obstacles, the match was played with the result that Ramblers won and entered the national finals. The opinion at the time was that Ramblers had no chance against Cincinnati who were considered the top ranked team and were the two time national champions. The results however, turned in Loyola Chicago Ramblers favor and they emerged as the winners of the NCAA Tournament. It is considered the only school in Chicago to have achieved this.
Over the years, Loyola Chicago Ramblers had their share of triumphs and popular players some of which include athletes like Tom O'Hara and basketball players Mike Novak, Wayne Sappleton, Jerry Harkness, Les Hunter, Keir Rogers, Alfredrick Hughes, LaRue Martin, and Blake Schilb.
