The name of the region also continues to exist in the tribal designation of the ancient population of Latins, from whom the Romans were said to have originated.
Roman myth states that the shadowy king Latinus allegedly gave his name to the region The name is most likely derived from the Latin word latus, meaning wide, expressing the idea of flat land, however another saying goes that the name may have originated from an earlier, non Indo-European name.
Latium, originally inhabited by the Latins, extended its boundaries to the territories to three existing places. And all credit to this attachment goes to the Roman conquests. This territory was called Latium Novi to differentiate it from Latium veteres, which indicated the original boundaries.
History has it that in the year 1870, French troops has abandoned Rome and then it was occupied on the 20th of September and Latium was enclosed within the Kingdom of Italy.
