Indianapolis
Capital of the Indiana, a state in America, Indianapolis is the 13th largest city in United States as per 2000 census records, holding the population count of over 781,870. Taking its place after Phoenix Arizona, Indianapolis is the 2nd most populous capital of the state.
The economy of Indianapolis doesn't only rely on manufacturing; in fact Indianapolis has diversified its economic base in several other things as well.
One of the major sources of economic growth of Indianapolis is the events, mainly sporting events that are being hosted year after year in the city. Which is why, Indianapolis has been entitled as The Racing Capital of the World and The Amateur Sports Capital of the World.
Some of the many sporting events that have been held in the city include Men's & Women's NCAA Basket Tournaments, Pan American Games, The Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, Big Ten Conference Men's Basket Ball Tournaments etc. Apart from that, Indianapolis has also been hosting U.S Grand Prix since 2000 till 2007.
Furthermore Super Bowl XLVI is also scheduled to be hosted by the city of Indianapolis in February of year 2012. Indianapolis is also known for holding two largest single day events that are The Indianapolis 500 and The Allstate 400, in which the fan count exceeds the number of 250,000 per event.
As far as Indianapolis's historical monuments are concerned, it stands on second rank for holding the most monuments within the city premises after Washington D.C.
Even though the growth rate of the state of Indiana is of modest rate, but the Indianapolis metropolitan area, incorporating the counties of Hamilton, Hendricks and Johnson are the fastest growing counties in the state of Indiana.
While the holding the population of over 2,014,267, its combined statistical area is the 23rd largest CSA in the United States. The name of the city, which is Indianapolis, was suggested by the judge of the Supreme Court of Indiana, Jeremiah Sullivan, who just added the Greek word Polis that means City, at the end of Indiana.
Due to the presence of White River, the city was created with an assumption of using it as a major transportation artery, however that assumption was made wrong as soon it was found that the waterway was too sandy for any kind of trade.
Before Indianapolis became the capital of the state, Corydon was known as the capital of state however that crown moved over to Indianapolis on January 10, 1825. And in order to design Indianapolis, the job was handed over to Alexander Ralston by the state.
The capital city of Indiana is situated on the east ? west National Road. Madison & Indianapolis was the very first rail road service to Indianapolis. The Rail Road was opened for operations on October 1, 1847.
The very first reason for the city's rapid growth was the subsequent rail road connections that followed after the rail road was open for functioning.
From the city several roads were connected to several other important cities like Chicago, Louisville, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and St. Louis, that positioned Indianapolis as the central hub for transportation.
