The world’s biggest and the most extravagant livestock show is about to kick off and you have to be a part of it. This event has been taking place for over eight decades now. It continues to attract an increasing number of people every year. The Houston Livestock Show takes place annually in Houston, Texas. It started off in 1931 and initially it was known as Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition. It usually kicks off somewhere in the end of March and goes on for almost three weeks ending in mid April. It kind of marks the arrival of the spring season. The event is so huge that in 2011, around 24000 volunteers were required to handle the twenty day event. Since 2003 the home venue for this event is the Reliant Stadium that is located on One Reliant Park in Houston. This stadium has the capacity to seat around 70,000 spectators. It is also the home ground for teams like the Houston Texans and Bayou Bucket. Apart from Houston Livestock show other events like WrestleMania, NCAA Final Four and Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas have taken place at this venue.
This is primarily is a livestock show that includes livestock animals such as cows, cattle’s, horses, swine, rabbits, goats and sheep. There are also livestock auctions taking place throughout the event for different animals. Apart from this the event has grown into a huge extravaganza that not just includes livestock shows but also other games and activities of interest for all the family members. Other highlights of this show include music concerts, the famous ConocoPhillips Rodeo run, Downtown Rodeo Parade, World Bar B Que contest, pig racing, carnival and even rodeo action. The ConocoPhillips rodeo run is an interesting walk competition in which people can take part, there are two types of walks one is 5 km and the other is 10 km long.
One more interesting thing that takes place on the Friday right before the show is the very famous Go Texan Day. On this Friday all participants are required and encouraged to wear traditional western dresses. The music concerts are another highlight of this event and some of the best musicians are invited to perform. In the past acclaimed groups and artists like Elvis Presley, Kiss, Bob Dylan, and Garth Brooks have performed here. In the last couple of years, popular bands and artists like Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton, The Black Eyed Peas, Eli young Band, Justin Beiber, Selena Gomez, Keith Urban and Zac Brown Band.
The World Bar B Que contest attracts some of the best chefs from different part of the country. This is a three day event and in 2009 it attracted around 200,000 viewers. Calf Scramble is an event that features 28 students and 14 calves, the students have to capture the calf with a halter and bring it to a certain place which is known as the winner square. Those students who are able to do this task are awarded a gift certificate worth $1250.
The Houston Livestock show attracted around two million visitors last year, and this time it is expected to attract even more from not just Texas or the US but also from different parts of the world.
