Two colleges that play in the top-flight American college sports league, the NCAA Division I, will face each other for a fascinating encounter this year. The Houston Baptist University's teams will face teams from Rice University, for a series that their fans have been eagerly waiting for. The Houston Baptist University is a member of the Southland Conference, except for the men's soccer team which is a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Part of the NCAA Division I, the university fields fifteen varsity teams which play at various venues. This includes football at the Crusader Stadium, basketball at the Sharp Gymnasium, baseball at the Husky Field and soccer at the Sorrells Field. The Huskies wear orange and royal blue as official colors. They have been playing in the NCAA Division I since 2007 after seventeen years in the NAIA. Initially members of the Great West Conference, they joined the Southland Conference in 2011 during the conference's expansion.

The Huskies field men's sports teams in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer and indoor and outdoor track & field. Women's sports teams play basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, volleyball and both indoor and outdoor track & field.

Rice University is a member of Conference USA and is also an NCAA Division I university. Rick Greenspan is the university's athletics director and the university is located in Houston, Texas. They field sixteen varsity teams and play football at the Rice Stadium, basketball at the Tudor Fieldhouse and baseball at the Reckling Park.

The university's official mascot is Sammy the Owl and their official colors are confederate gray and union blue. The Owls are the second smallest college playing in the NCAA Division I and share a fierce rivalry with the University of Texas at Austin and have a cross-town rivalry with the University of Houston.

The Owls' baseball team has won the College World Series once and have come third overall in two more College World Series in 2006 and 2007. The university plays football at Rice Stadium, which hosted Super Bowl VII and was the venue for President John F. Kennedy's speech in which he challenged the Nation to send a man to the man.
