Details of Holiday Bowl and the Ticket Luck value
The battles on the pitch have been fought with valor, & as the season closes, the warriors retreat to their dens to boast of their laurels & lick their wounds. A short respite perhaps... But in collegiate football, there is no letting up of the excitement! End of season means the onset of 34 different bowl games all over the country; exhibition games showcasing titans slugging it out against each other, & standing head & shoulders above the rest is the Holiday Bowl. Sanctioned by the NCAA, the Holiday Bowl is a Division I-A collegiate football game played annually at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California, that pits the Pac-10 conference runners-up against the 3rd place team from the Big 12. The Pac-10 consists of 10 research universities littered along the West Coast, while the Big 12 is a college athletic conference representing universities hailing predominantly from central USA. It was formed after the former Big-8 amalgamated with 4 Texas schools, giving birth to a sensational rivalry that has witnessed some breathtaking spectacles over the years.
Running over 3 decades, the Holiday Bowl was founded in 1978, but time has seen the selection procedure tinkered with on numerous occasions. Whereas the inaugural Bowl game on December 22, 1978 saw the Western Athletic Conference champions (BYU Cougars) lock horns with an at-large opponent from the rest of the US (Navy Midshipmen in 1978), the pairing resulted in controversy in the early years since BYU invariably emerged WAC champions for the first four seasons, & for 3 later Bowls. Wholesale changes on the West Coast participation slots saw WAC replaced by the Pac-10 in 1997, eventually resulting in the Pac-10 runners-up taking up the slot. On the opponents' side, the commercial success of the Bowl attracted a permanent place for champions of the Big Ten conference from 1986 to 1994, before a series of alterations gave the competition its present state, with the 3rd placed team from the Big 12 taking up the slot. A payout of a handsome $2.35 million is contested, but the emergence of lucrative rival bowls has further changed the selection system. For the next four Holiday Bowls, the 3rd Pac-10 team will square off against the 5th team from the Big 12, after contracts for the earlier contenders' participation were snapped up by the more lucrative Alamo Bowl, which offered prize money worth $3 million. Yet the grandeur of the contest remains preserved.
The thunderous roar of chanting fans & grunting quarterbacks, flashy masquerades of the mascots & the slick moves of the cheerleaders all make for a truly festive atmosphere at the 71,000 capacity Qualcomm Stadium. The field has been the hunting ground for some of collegiate football's most exciting teams often putting up stellar performances at "the Q". The 1980 contest, that BYU fans refer to as the Miracle Bowl, saw the Cougars write their name into football folklore with an astounding comeback that saw them claw their way back in the final four minutes from 45-25 down to the Southern Methodist team, & turn the game on its head to pip their rivals to the title. 1984 saw controversy overshadow the Bowl as the Cougars won the national championship at the Bowl, a much-criticized outcome. University of Oregon Ducks are the current holders.
Pacific Life are the current sponsors, having forged a productive partnership with the organizers since 2002, prior to which Culligan, Plymouth, SeaWorld & Thrifty Car Rental subsequently held the sponsorship deals. The current President of the Board of Directors is Barbara Warden. The Qualcomm stadium, operated by the City of San Diego manages the event, which draws fans from different states together in the raucous environment, guaranteeing a broad fan base.
Amid the touchdowns & barbarian tackles, the Holiday Bowl promises much more than just the football spectacle. The 100 by 50 yards Big Flag is unfurled before the game, & the ceremony adds patriotic passion to the charged atmosphere. The Holiday Bowl is the complete extravaganza, with the Weiner Nationals (the national daschund racing championships) held parallel to the game to boost its entertainment value. Media coverage rights are held by ESPN, which has seen the Bowl evolve into one of the most viewed sporting events around the globe, with 4 of the top 10 list coming courtesy Holiday Bowl games. Although ticket prices have risen to meet payout demands, the Holiday Bowl offers fans the perfect chance to end the season on an insurmountable high.
