George Mason Patriots is the name of George Mason University’s athletic teams. The school has a total of twenty-two NCAA “Division I” varsity teams, including eleven women’s and eleven men’s teams. The Patriots were one of the founding members of the Colonial Athletic Association in which they also compete. They began their move from the NAIA and the NCAA “Division II” status into NCAA “Division I” rank with the men’s basketball team in 1978-1979. Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams have been prominent features of the campus life. All the other sports also got promoted to the “Division I” status within just a few years’ time. The university attained the present level of twenty varsity teams by adding women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, as well as women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams. The Patriots’ most renowned player ever is George Evans, a veteran of Gulf War, who played from the years 1997-2001, being a CAA athlete of the year for three successive seasons. Evans shares his CAA record with the NBA superstar David Robinson, for having the honor 3 straight times!
