The Florida Atlantic Owls mascot is Owsley the Burrowing Owl and the teams within the Florida Atlantic Owls athletics program are usually nicknamed as the Owls. The official colors are silver, blue and red. The renowned Florida Atlantic Owls have eight men's teams and ten women's teams. The men's sports include Baseball, Cross Country, Basketball, Football, Soccer, Golf, Swimming and Tennis. The women's sports include Basketball, Tennis, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Cheerleading, Dance, Swimming, Indoor and Outdoor Track and field and Volleyball.
The smashing football team that represents the Florida Atlantic University first began playing football back in 2001 under the supervision of head coach Howard Schnellenberger. In only four seasons, the team had qualified from Division I-AA to Division I-A after which the team joined the Sun Belt Conference. In only eight years of playing football, the Florida Atlantic Owls have a record of 47-47. Back in 2007, the team played its first Bowl match as part of the New Orleans Bowl where they brutally defeated their opponents, the Memphis Tigers. The football team has also played in the Motor City Bowl in 2008 and defeated the Central Michigan Chippewas. This amazing team also plays in the Shula Bowl against arch rival, the Florida International Golden Panthers, a Bowl it has won eight times and lost only once.
The baseball team first began playing baseball back in 1983 and is a legendary baseball program that has been labeled as one of the best in the US. This highly successful basketball team has won many awards. These include nine Regional Championships, one Super Regional Championship, three Regular Season Conference Championships, one Conference Tournament Championship, two hundred and ninety student athlete scholarships, ten players as All Americans with seven of them Freshmen and sixty seven players to have gone on to play professional football in leagues like the NFL. The Florida Atlantic Owls basketball team has defeated the Oklahoma State University's Cowboys in a historic match as well as won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The softball team has won around nine Atlantic Sun Conference Championships in ten years as well as a Sun Belt Conference Championship the year the team joined the Sun Belt Conference.
