The team had played for the last time in the year of 1998 in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The Eagles are currently coached by Charles Ramsey.
The team has won three NCAA Division II national championships and 13 NAIA Division I national championships in five different sports like baseball, men's cross country, men's swimming and diving, men's indoor track and field, and men's outdoor track and field.
The men's cross country team had finished second to Indiana University in the year of 1940, at the national meet hosted by Michigan State University. EMU had been a member of the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 1950-1961.
The team had stood at the sixth place in the baseball team in the year of 1976. the team was defeated by the University of Arizona in the final game of the College World Series at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha of Nebraska.
The team had played very well under the coaching by Ron Oestrike, the Hurons had defeated Maine, Clemson, and Arizona State before losing its last two games to Arizona. The men's basketball team of the school has appeared NCAA Division I tournaments for four times.
They have set a record of 3-4, which was considered as a great tie for third best among Michigan colleges. They had also got the chance to reach in the Sweet Sixteen in the 1991 tournament, where they had defeated Duke University in the first round of the 1996 tournament.
The Eagles also hold the record for the most MAC Championships in a single sport, they have appeared in 25 games, for Men's Swimming and Diving, and had a series of win over for the years like 1979, 1981-1996, 1998, and 2000-2005.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles has a mid-major college football program at Eastern Michigan University. They compete in Division I-A, and the Mid-American Conference. The football team usually plays one home game a year at Ford Field in downtown.
If we look at the history of the program, then it is easy to say that it had problems, to attract the fans for their football games each season. According to the NCAA rules, a team needs to attract an average of 15,000 fans per game, in order to stay in Division I-A for football, each.
Eastern's EMU Foundation purchased 5,000 tickets for local high school students to curb this threat to their status. The annual game at Ford Field also boosts their average attendance.
The interesting and the greatest football victory in EMU history had occurred in December 1987. it was a time, when The MAC Champion Hurons had defeated 17 1/2 point favorite San Jose State in the California Bowl.
The victory culminated a 10-2 season and improbable rise from the depths of Division I-A college football. It happened only after two years of serious losses by the team.
