The Flyers is an interesting name, being devised for the intercollegiate athletic teams of the University of Dayton. The name has been a reference and homage to the two of the great inventors' from Dayton named Orville and Wilbur Wright, who were the pioneers of heavier than air flight.

Red Scare is rightfully considered as one of the most influential student organizations, having the great capacity to campaign and to get the support of the crowds for the any of the University of Dayton athletic contest.
The organization was formed in the year of 2000; its popularity has been shown by the number of members, which has increased from 50 to 1300 undergraduate students.
The strength of the Red Scare keeps on increasing at every passing year, making all of student facilities with some of the most intimidating environments in the nation. The traditional rivals of The Flyers' are the regional schools like Xavier, Cincinnati, and Miami.
There are other historical rivals including Louisville, Notre Dame, DePaul, and Marquette. The latter three schools had formed an informal basketball league with Dayton during the 1970s and 1980s, prior to formal league association for each school.
The official mascot of the team is named as Rudy Flyer. He is dressed in early pilot's attire including a scarf and goggles. Each year, two or three students are appointed as being responsible for the wearing the Rudy suit.
The Division of Athletics of the university is dedicated to educate the total person by integrating the primary academic purposes with educational possibilities and opportunities beyond the classroom.
It is a unique combination of academics and fields of play and arenas of competition has allowed the University to produce distinctive graduates and citizens.
