The Citadel Bulldogs is the athletics program and the many varsity team that call The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina home. It is a member of the Southern Conference within the NCAA Division I. The current athletics director is Larry Leckonby and the university, alongwith its teams is found at Charleston, South Carolina. It is home to sixteen varsity teams of which the football teams play at the Johnson Haqood Stadium, the basketball teams at the McAllister Field House, the soccer teams at the WLI Field and the baseball teams at the Joseph P. The Citadel Bulldogs college sports team compete in the Southern Conference, except for the rifle team that competes in the South Eastern Air Rifle Conference. Nine of the sixteen teams are men’s teams and seven are women’s college sports teams. Women’s sports include cross country, rifle, gold, soccer, volleyball and track & field. Men’s sports include baseball, cross country, basketball, rifle, football, track & field, tennis and wrestling. From its founding in 1909 until 1935, the teams were part of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Alongwith six other colleges, it joined the Southeastern Conference, created by former SIAA members who had joined the Southern Conference and left it.
The Citadel Bulldogs have rivalries with several colleges. Foremost amongst these are rivalries with the VMI Keydets, the College of Charleston Cougars and the Furman Paladins. The have the longest rivalry with the Furman Paladins. With the VMI Keydets, the rivalry started with the Silver Shako Trophy for football, launched in 1976. Today, it is known as the Military Classic of the South and led to a fierce rivalry between the two colleges. The College of Charleston Cougars are strong rivals in baseball and basketball. Historically, the college has had notable rivalries with the Clemson Tigers, the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Presbyterian College and the Newberry College.
The Citadel Bulldogs most successful college sport is baseball; this men’s basketball marvel has bagged eight Baseball Tournament championships in the Southern Conference and breathtaking thirteen Championships in the same conference. In 1990, the team made it to the College World Series, the first ever military college in the US to do so. They finished the series with a spectacular 46-14 record. They have also been ranked sixth all over the world in the Collegiate Baseball ranking poll. They are presently lead by Fred Jordan, a coach who has led the team to more than seven hundred wins.
The Citadel Bulldogs basketball team has been playing since 1900. In football, they have won Championships twice in the Southern Conference and emerged victors in the Tangerine Bowl. They have made it to the NCAA FCS playoffs thrice, making it as far as the second round. They have been ranked first in the US in the season I-AA ranking poll. Many of their players are members of the NFL, after having been successfully drafted. This includes Stump Mitchell by the St Louis Cardinals and Paul Maguire by the San Diego Chargers, presently an ESPN analyst.
