Charleston RiverDogs
Minor League baseball team, Charleston RiverDogs, is based in Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston RiverDogs play their home games at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park and are the members of Southern Division of South Atlantic League. The history of baseball in Charleston draws back from 1886, when the Charleston Seagulls played for the first time at an old high school baseball field attracting a total of 32 viewers. But later on the team developed its repute and started to be known as Sea Gulls.

As Sea Gulls on field performance improved they were able to get a hold at the South Atlantic League Championship in the year 1907. Sea Gulls also played in 1908 and 1909, but due to undiscovered reasons Sea Gull weren't able to play in 1910. Sea Gulls played again in the following year. In 1912, Sea Gulls home ground was severely damaged due to a hurricane, which prevented them from playing in 1912 as well. The next year, Sea Gulls got new ballpark that was known as the College Park.

Few years later in 1919, Sea Gulls officially changed their name to the Gulls. A year later the team was renamed once again and this it was renamed to Palmettos. The name Palmettos was further shortened to Pals in 1921, and also in the same year Charleston was promoted to Class B. Then came 1922, a year when Pals won the South Atlantic League title and caused quite a stir in the baseball scene in Charleston. Unfortunately 1922 didn't only bring the good news to the baseball fans but also the bad news. Also in the same year the team disbanded and professional baseball totally vanished from Charleston for next 16 years.

The next professional baseball team that emerged to play from Charleston was Charleston Rebels that was founded in 1940. Rebels started to rise up as two years after the team was founded; they won their first South Atlantic League Championship. Unfortunately in the following year team wasn't able to perform well. 1947 was perhaps the most successful year for the Rebels as the team was promoted to class A, and started attracting massive number of fans to the games.

Also it 1947, the Rebels won their second South Atlantic League Championship. That championship was the last championship that Rebels won, in fact 1947's season was their last successful season, after which teams' performance started to fall down, which is why teams' fan base started to reduce and ultimately in 1953, the team folded as well.

Baseball made its return to Charleston in 1959, and only for this time team was affiliated with MLB team Chicago White Sox. The team proved to be a huge disaster as it wasn't able to attract much attention of the fans. Later in 1973, Charleston Pirates were assembled. The team had its affiliation with Pittsburgh Pirates and played for the Western Carolina League. Team didn't came out to be that successful as well and didn't attract much of the viewers, hence Pirates left Charleston as well in 1978.

RiverDogs history draws back from 1980, when the team was formed under the name of Charleston Royals. The team had a good start as the won Southern Division Championship of South Atlantic League and were renowned for their powerful pitching. Royals were renamed to Rainbows in 1985. The team was going good until 1989. From 1989 and onwards team suffered 11 losses in a row. Then in 1994 the team was ultimately renamed to RiverDogs, while keeping their losing streak the same, which lasted till 2026.
