Full named Calcio Catania Spa, this team that was formed in 1908 has its roots based in Sicily, Catania. Competing majorly in Serie B, an Italian Football League System's division, the franchise plays in the second highest division. Playing amidst twenty one other teams, Catania has made their way to Serie A, the highest division, a total of five times. They are currently a part of this division after making their way to the top of the football pyramid, where they have achieved moderate amount of success.
The foundation for the team was laid with the start of the twentieth century when English cargo ship workers from Sicily made their way back to their home country and introduced the game to the locals. Gaining popularity almost immediately, a few of these workers started playing together under the team name of Royal Yacht Catania and the first friendly match that took place was in May of 1901 against the team Messina at San Raineri di Messina. Even though this team was the very first football team of the area; however, it wasn't an official football club that could compete in professional matches. It was in 1908 that the first stable football club sprung to existence. Established by Francesco Sturzo d'Aldobrando and Gaetano Ventimiglia, the team was named A.S. Educazione Fisica Pro Patria. Playing their first official match against Regina Margherita, in a match that ended in a draw, the very first lineup of the team consisted of players, Bianchi, Vassallo, Slaiter, Messina, Binning, Pappalardo and Caccamo, just to name a few.
Initially playing in club competitions such as Sant' Agata, Lipton and Agordad Cup, the franchise went onto winning the Campionato Catanese in 1928-29 season, which led to the franchise gaining massive recognition. With this a name change was seen and the club became Societa Sportiva Catania. The team then started competing in Serie B of the IFL from their 1934-35 seasons, finishing fourth in the first year. With the onset of the Second World War the team had to deal with several relegations, moving down to Serie C, with several clubs being merged into the team. The franchise first saw the merger of Elefante Catania into its team, after which Virtus Catania was also merged with it.
Consisting of several star players such as Messora, Goffi, Prevosti and Ardesi, the team's name was kept Club Calcio Catania which moved onto competing in Serie B from the 1948-49 season and finally Serie A in the 2006 season. Establishing records such as making the most number of league appearances from 1975 to 1984, the largest number of league goals and the greatest Serie A appearances, Catania has grown to become one of the top Italian football franchises.
