Founded in 2001, Calgary Roughnecks play their games at Scotiabank Saddledome. Affectionately called as Riggers by the fans, Roughnecks have won three division championships in 2005, 2009 and 2011. Champions Cup was captured by them twice on their home floor; one by defeating Buffalo Bandits in 2004 and second by defeating New York Titans in 2009. Since 2002, the Roughnecks have been qualifying for the post-season every year. The team made its debut in 2001 against the Montreal Express but lost the game. It had its first victory in December 2011 by defeating Ottawa Rebel. The next four games including the one against Columbus Landsharks were won by Roughnecks. The team won its first championship in the 2002-2003 season by beating the Bandits in front of 19,289 fans. In 2005, they hosted the NLL All Star Game which was televised nationally for the first time. The same year, the team’s captain Kelusky won the award of Most Valuable Player.
However, the most successful season in the history of Roughnecks was that of 2009 when the team made a record with five straight wins finishing the season 12-4. This was when they took the first overall in the NLL. This Champion’s Cup was the team’s first championship win after 2004. Roughnecks had given a tough time to Colorado Mammoth, New York Titans and San Jose Stealth. The official new mascot of the team is Howie, the Honey Badger who was introduced in 2012. Their former mascot was Derrick who is an Oilpatch Rigger. Among the award winning players of the team include Jeff Shattler, Curtis Dickson, Josh Sanderson and Taylor Wray.
Shawn Evans who was the team-leading scorer last year is also returning this year along with Captain Andre McBride and Assistant Captain Mike Carnegie. Among other returning players include Mike Poulin, NLL Goaltender of the Year 2012. The new faces that you will see this season are Joe Resetraits, Matthew Dinsdale, Jackson Decker, Brad Richards and Aaron Pascas where the first three players are from the seven NLL Entry Draft selections of 2012.
