Currently competing in the Big West Conference of the NCAA's Division I, the Cal State Northridge Matadors is a college basketball program of California State University, Northridge. CSUN (California State University, Northridge) is a public university in the San Fernando Valley, within the city limits of Los Angeles, California, USA. Matador's Humble Beginnings
Prior to 1972, the school and its teams were known as San Fernando Valley State College that had opened in 1958. SFVSC debuted in the 1958-59 basketball season under the directions of its first head coach Paul Thomas. Their first win of the program's history came on December 13, a 73-64 triumph over La Verne after losing a few games.
Back in Action
Over the next two seasons the Matadors showed some improvement. In 1961 the team joined the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) which is an intercollegiate athletic conference in the Division II of the NCAA. Jerry Ball was made the new coach who took the team to a 9-17 record in 1963-64, as well as their first-ever winning season, finishing 18-8 in 1964-65. 1970-71 season saw the team's win in their first conference championship also under Ball, finishing 7-1 in the CCAA. A top player Jerry Joseph played for the Matadors from 1967 to 1970. He ended his collegiate career with 1204 points and 807 rebounds. He is still the all-time leading rebounder in school history. An SFVSC assistant coach, Pete Cassidy replaced Ball. The team led by Cassidy finished 16-9 and tied for first in the CCAA. For the next five seasons, Northridge again fell to mediocrity. However, in the 1977-78 season lady luck struck again. Led by Division II All-Americans Terry Miller and Larry Singleton, and Chuck Evans the team finished 22-7 and won the CCAA title. With Matadome attendance record of 3,100 fans, CSUN made their first postseason appearance, hosting the Division II Western Regional, but lost to San Diego 70-67 in the regional final. During that season, the Matadors ranked 7th in the Division II poll nationally.
Starting with the 1990-91 season, Cal State Northridge moved its athletics program, including basketball, to Division I. Forced to play as an independent, and then in the fledgling American West Conference, the Matadors never won more than 11 games in any of their first six seasons in Division I.
Touching New Heights
In 1996, Matadors joined the Big Sky Conference (BSC) and Cassidy was replaced by Bobby Braswell who took the team to new hieghts with 20-10 in the 1999-2000 season, and finally breaking through with a 22-10 season resulting in the Matadors winning the Big Sky regular season and tournament championships and make their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament as well.
In 2001 Northridge Matadors joined the Big West and have struggled since. Their best finish in the Big West have been ties for 3rd-place in 2001-02 and 2004-05. They finished 18-13 in 2004-05, their only winning record since leaving the Big Sky.
Season 2007-2008
The 2007-08 season marks the 50th season of intercollegiate basketball at Cal State Northridge. Led by head coach, Bobby Braswell, Cal State Northridge Matadors has more depth on its bench this season. The current roster includes Heard Jonathan, Chitwood Calvin, Haynes Rob, Tresvant Deon, Wayne Paul, Jenkins Josh, Townsend Tremaine, Miller Jayme, Colston Rai, Scott Evan, Reed Xavier, Smith Jermaine, and Taylor Therin. It is one of the few teams in the Big West that has the scoring options to go point for point with Pacific. Bobby Braswell has coached 340 games in his duties as head coach, and has produced a record of 180-160 (.529) He has guided Cal State Northridge to postseason play in each of his previous eleven seasons, reaching the conference tournament championship game on four occasions. In past seasons under Braswell, the Matadors have prided themselves on tough defense and a productive offense. Last year, the Matadors led the Big West Conference in rebounding margin (+6.9) and steals (8.97). Already this year, the Matadors have forced the opponents in 311 turnovers, produced 151 steals (#1 in the Big West), and have out rebounded the opposition, 580-546. The Matadors, who are shooting 46.1 percent on the year, are currently producing a whopping 80.3 ppg. Chitwood, an All-Conference candidate in 2007-08 is expected to be one of the top scorers and rebounders in the Big West Conference. He has played in 81 games during his three previous at Cal State Northridge, 63 as a starter. An outstanding shooter who has shot .536 (#10 all-time at CSUN) during his career in a Matador uniform, he is netting 12.1 ppg this season and is also grabbing 5.9 rpg, while leading the squad with 26 blocks. As for Townsend, he is chipping in 10.4 ppg and is collecting a team-best 8.9 rpg. Jayme Miller is a veteran, post player who is probably the strongest player on the roster in 2007-08. Injuries have slowed his progress in past years, but he is 100 percent healthy and ready to go this year.
Winners of five straight games, the Matadors are 12-3 overall and alone atop the Big West standings at 4-0 - CSUN's best conference start since they moved to the Division I level in 1990-91, and overall there best league start in 30 years. CSUN is ranked 16th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll. The latest Sagarin poll (1/13/08) finds CSUN ranked 56th in the nation, and 59th in the RPI poll (1/13/08), the team's highest ranking in school history. In the RPI poll, CSUN is ranked ahead of four Pac-10 teams, Arizona State (69th), USC (73rd), Washington (105th) and Oregon State (248th).
