Also known as The Open Championship, the British Open is one of the oldest professional golf championships. This is one of the major sports championships that is held outside of the USA. Ever since the year 1979, the championship has been taking place in July on a weekend, after every third Friday to be more particular. This is because the rules include a four-hole playoff towards the closing of a regulation and then moves its way into sudden death if the four holes end up being tied.

The winners are not only awarded with prize money but are also recognized with some pretty amazing awards. These include The Challenge Belt, The Golf Championship Trophy, Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals, Ryle Memorial Medal, Tooting Bec Cup and Braid Taylor Memorial Medal to name a few.

The British Open is a part of the PGA Tour and takes place at different venues each time. These are decided years before hand. The 2013 British Open will be held in Scotland in the Muirfield course, the 2014 championship will be held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, England and the 2015 and 2016 British Open Championships both in Scotland at the Old Course at Saint Andrews and Royal Troon Golf Club respectively.
