The Boston University Terriers is one of the most successful university teams of America. The terriers compete in nine men's and twelve women's games and represent Boston University in NCAA Division I competition.

The men compete in basketball, cross country, golf, ice hockey, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, field hockey and softball. Their official mascot is Rhett the Boston Terrier and school colors are Scarlet and White.

The Boston Terriers traces their roots to 1916 when a basketball game on December 16 marked the official entrance of Boston University into varsity level competition.

The President Lemuel Murlin realized the importance of athletic potential and since then it remained one of the focal points of university administration.

During the 1917-18 academic year BU students chose the Boston terrier as the official school mascot, thus, started an era of sports and athletics that was soon going to be recognized worldwide.

After Basketball many other sporting teams were formed that established university's reputation as a progressive and athletics friendly institute.

The Terriers ice hockey team was formed in 1917 followed by football and baseball teams in 1920. Track was introduced in 1931 while crew tennis and soccer teams were established in 1939, 1948 and 1949.

Boston University's Hockey team is known for its consistent performance in NCCA. It has reached the Final Four 20 times in 27 tournament appearances. Since the beginning of tournament in 1948, the Terriers have won 4 National Championships and remained runner-up 5 times.

They play in the Hockey East Conference. Their cross-town rival is Boston College. Boston University's Hockey team has progressed a lot in 90's under coach Jack Parker.

They won four Hockey East regular season titles, shared two and remained the National runner-up three times. The decade also earned them a National Championship in 1995.

The Boston University Terriers outperform others in Beanpot as well. This mid-season tournament is held every year and sees the clash of four major Boston area schools, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern and Harvard at TD Banknorth Garden.

The Terriers have won 28 of 56 Beanpots till yet. There past year performance is quite remarkable as they have won 11 Beanpots out of the last 14.

Boston University also competes in the America East Conference for many other sports. The Men's Basketball team is notable for grooming big name college coaches such as Rick Pitino and Mike Jarvis.

They have scored well in NCAA tournaments so far. Their rivalry with Maine Black Bears and the Vermont Catamounts is known in basketball circles. The team has been earning post-season berths from the last four years in the tournament.

The Boston Terriers have shown remarkable success in the game of rowing. Its men's and women's rowing teams compete in the oldest and most competitive conferences in collegiate rowing namely EARC and EAWRC. The women' rowing team has won back to back national championships in 1991 and 1992.

The Boston University Terriers men's ice hockey program is one of the most popular NCAA Division I sports at Boston University and has a very large fan base on campus.The Ice Terriers has played some very good seasons and won Beanpot tournament twenty eight times so far.

The last one was in 2006-07 where they defeated equally famous rival Boston College and made their way to the third consecutive title. The team also reached NCAA tournament quarterfinals and won honors like RBK All-America First Team, Hockey East Player of the Year and National leader in shutouts.

The Terriers have also seen national success in men's and women's soccer, field hockey, and women's lacrosse. The Terriers play their games at different venues.

Nickerson Field is home to basketball, women's ice hockey, soccer, lacrosse and wrestling teams while Agganis Arena serves as home to the nationally-recognized Terrier hockey team.

This 290,000-square-foot multi-purpose sports and entertainment center was opened in January 2005 and has hosted many thrilling games from then.

Terriers' softball field and indoor Track and Tennis Center also receive huge turnout. There is one the Fitness and Recreation Center as well that includes a pool and diving well for the swim teams.
