Borussia Dortmund
BV Borussia Dortmund is a German football club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. Borussia Dortmund is one of the most successful clubs in German football.
The Club has won six German football championships, two DFB Pokal victories, the UEFA Cup Winners; Cup in 1966 and the UEFA Champions League in 1997. Borussian Dortmund was the first German team to have won a European Title.
Borussia Dortmund was established by a group of young men unhappy with church-sponsored Trinity Youth on December 19, 1909. ?Borussia' is a Latin name for Prussia and was taken from the nearby Borussia brewery.
The Dortmunds began play in blue and white striped shirts with a red sash, and black shorts. However, since 1913, they have been following the current dress colors: black and yellow.
The following decades saw only modest success for the franchise playing in local leagues.
Borussia Dortmund suffered bankruptcy in 1929 when an attempt to boost the club's fortunes by signing some paid professional footballers failed miserably. It left the team deep in debt. The club survived only through the generosity of a local supporter.
The first division league including Borussia was the Oberliga West which dominated German football through the late 50s. The franchise claimed its first national title in 1956, followed up with another win the next season.
In 1961 final, they made a losing appearance. In 1962, the Deutscher Fussball Bund, DFB, or German Football Association met in Dortmund to establish a Germany's professional football league to begin play in August of 1963 as the Bundesliga.
Borussia made its place among the first sixteen sides to play in the new league by winning the last pre-Bundesliga championship. In 1965, Dortmund won its first German Cup.
They had a mixed result the next year when they won the European Cup Winners Cup in1860. Ironically, much of 1860's success came on the strength of the play of Konietzka, recently transferred there from Dortmund.
The 70s saw financial problems and relegation from the Bundesliga in 1972 and the opening of the Westfalenstadion in 1974. The club made its come back to Bundesliga in 1976, but continued to suffer from financial problems through the 80s.
The club did not have any significant success again until a German Cup win in 1989. At the turn of the millennium, Borussia Dortmund became the first and the only publicly traded club on the German stock market.
Two years later the franchise won their third Bundesliga title, following a remarkable run at the end of the season to overtake Bayer Leverkusen. In the same season Borussia was defeated by Dutch side Feyenoord in the final of the 2002 UEFA Cup.
The Club's fortunes have steadily declined since then. Time witnessed their poor financial management which led to a heavy debt load and eventually the sale of their Westfalenstadion ground.
The situation worsened when the team was eliminated on penalties in the qualifying rounds by Club Brugge. They remained unsuccessful to advance in the 2003 Champions League.
To pull itself out of bankruptcy, the stadium was renamed Signal Iduna Park, and is currently the largest football stadium in Germany with a capacity of 81,264 spectators. It also hosted several matches in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The 2007?08 season proved to be one of the worst in 20years for the Club, losing to many of the smaller clubs in the Bundesliga.
