One of the most famous tennis exhibition competitions in the world is now just around the corner to offer fans another installment of action packed tennis. The BNP Paribas Showdown is exactly what its name states, a showdown between some of the biggest names in the sport. If you are a tennis fan then grab your BNP Paribas Showdown tickets and be a part of the event live.
It is an exhibition competition that is held over one single night at the iconic "Madison Square Garden." Four tennis players compete against each other in two games of one set each. There are no second chances, the player that loses the match is eliminated right there and then. The winners of the two matches then go head to head in the final which is a full three sets in length.
The BNP Paribas Showdown can trace its roots back to 2008. An exhibition game, called the "NetJets Showdown" was played between two legends "Pete Sampras" and "Roger Federer." Sampras was retired by then whereas Federer was the number one player in the world. It was the coming together of two generations of tennis in a dream match. The contest lasted three sets with Federer coming out on top by a score of two sets to one.
The competition was officially named the "Billie Jean King Cup" to pay tribute to one of the most decorated female tennis players the game of tennis has ever seen. It was an all women affair that featured the likes of "Venus Williams," "Serena Williams," "Jelena Jankovic" and "Ana Ivanovic." The Williams sisters made it to the final where Serena beat her older sibling to lift the trophy.
The event received positive response from almost every corner. The matches, especially the final between the Williams sisters attracted a lot of viewership. The 2010 edition was contested by "Venus Williams," "Ana Ivanovic," "Kim Clijsters" and "Svetlana Kuznetsova." Ivanovic was beaten by Clijsters and Williams trumped Kuznetsova. The final was won by Williams. "Pete Sampras," "Andre Agassi," "John McEnroe" and "Ivan Lendl" took part in the tournament the next year. Agassi and Sampras qualified for the final with the latter coming out on top in two straight sets.
The BNP Paribas Showdown was a mixed affair in 2012. "Maria Sharapova" won the women's draw whereas "Andy Roddick" lifted the men's title. The tournament has well and truly captured the hearts and minds of the tennis fraternity. With every year that goes by its profile keeps on scaling new heights. The event also marks the commencement of the tennis season in North America and you can be a part of it all by simply buying BNP Paribas Showdown tickets.
