Big West Tournament
Big West Tournament is a sports championship played between the teams of Big West conference every year. The conference has recently completed its 39th year of play and passion. The Big West Tournament see the clash of some of the most competitive and powerful teams that compete hard to clutch the prestigious tournament.
The Big West tournament witnesses the clash of Big West Teams every year. This forty years old conference has attempted for athletic and academic success and undergone membership changes throughout its long history.
Currently, Big West Conference owns the distinction of being America's only conference with its entire membership located in one state, California. The Conference, however, embodies the identity, history, and tradition of the whole nation and its winning identity is recognized on national level.
The Big West Conference facilitates different sports in both men and women category. These include soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming and diving, golf, tennis, volleyball and track and field.
The Conference was formed as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association on July 1, 1969. The name was changed to Big West Conference in 1988, in the 20th year of its existence. Currently, the conference includes teams like Cal Poly, Cal St. Northridge, Long Beach St, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and Pacific.
Long Beach St is the oldest team in the conference that has been playing 1969, the year when the conference came into existence.
The Big West is one of only two non Division I-A conferences to have as many as five schools ranked in the top 100 of United States Sports Academy Directors Cup for 2006-07.
The Cup gauges the best overall collegiate athletics programs in NCAA Division I according to their finishes in NCAA postseason play. Big West has the honor that many great players of American history played in the conference at some point of time.
Several of its athletes have also competed in prestigious international competitions such as the Olympics and Pan-American Games.
The tournaments inside the Conference are as much fun as those of outside. The Big West tournament is being held in The Arena at the Anaheim Convention Center for the past eighth consecutive years. The arena is located near Disneyland Resort and the Downtown Disney District.
The last tournament witnessed some of the best games of the conference history. The UC Santa Barbara men's basketball team claimed the No. 1 seed in the tournament. This was also the first regular season crown for UCSB since the 2002-03 season.
The 2006-07 season also became the highlight for Big West Conference schools as they won two national championships and a pair of schools reached the College World Series, also known as the Mecca of baseball. Postseason achievements were also very positive as UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team captured its first NCAA Championship.
They defeated UCLA by a close 2-1 and marked their 17th national team title in Big West history. The Big West ranked seventh nationally among conferences in the final computer rankings of that year.
The spring season was also fruitful as Dashalle Andrews captured the national championship in the men's long jump and became the 12th Big West men's track athlete to hoist a national crown. In the fall season three Big West teams advanced to the NCAA championships in women's volleyball.
Three Big West cross country athletes earned All-America status with their performances at the NCAA Championships. They are Cal Poly's Phillip Reid, UC Santa Barbara's J.D. Krawczyk and Lauren Christman.
The winter sports season brought improvement from both the men's and women's programs. The men's basketball of Big West captured its highest computer ranking in ten years while the women's basketball computer rankings also saw a dramatic rise. The Long Beach State men reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 12 years.
The swimmers also captured All-America accolades at the NCAA Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The accomplishments were not confined to just these games. The tournament has witnessed some powerful competitions by men's soccer, track and field, baseball and several other games as well.
The name Big West embodies the identity, history, and tradition of excellence in sports. Its tournaments are always full of exciting and memorable games that should not be missed. The Big West tournament is considered as the most exciting of all the sporting events.
