Bethune Cookman Wildcats
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats refer to the college sports teams at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Bethune-Cookman currently fields varsity teams in ten different sports which include men's and women's basketball, bowling, baseball, cross country running, football, men's and women's golf, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball.
The Wildcats have captured 25 MEAC titles; 10 in baseball, 1 in bowling, 1 in men's cross country, 2 in women's cross country, 3 in football, 2 in women's indoor track and field, 5 in softball and 2 in women's tennis.
The primary function of the Bethune-Cookman College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to work to fulfill the educational mission of the college.
This is done by promoting the values of sportsmanship and ethical conduct in all aspects of the intercollegiate athletics program.
These values are manifested not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the intercollegiate athletics program.
The role of the Bethune-Cookman College is to prepare students in the Christian Tradition for careers by developing their abilities to think clearly, make sound judgments and communicate effectively.
The college also makes them utilize specifically developed academic skills and practices within their chosen career and is further committed to developing in students. The role of the department of athletics is to provide mechanisms to meet the needs of each student-athlete with these educational, athletic, social and moral experiences.
The college and department of athletics are responsible for providing the best possible environment for its student-athletes to compete against quality opponents.
Mervyl Melendez became head coach of the Wildcardsin 1999. Under Melendez, the baseball team has won six consecutive MEAC championships from 1999-2004, and two more in 2006-2007. Melendez was voted MEAC Coach of the year in 2000 and 2001.
The Wildcats under this coach have made regional appearances in every year from 2000-2004. Also in 2006, one of the Meledez's players was credited with Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Pitcher of the Year accolades.
The Wildcats have had an intense rivalry with Florida A&M. Bethune-Cookman University is proud of the accomplishments of its intercollegiate athletics program. The 2006-07 academic year proved to be chronicle for years to come.
That year was served as a year of ?rebirth and reaffirmation' and was remembered much like the year 1904. The emergence as a University poised to change the world was an exciting time in Daytona Beach.
Bethune Cookman Wildcats represent the college sports of Bethune Cookman University. Comprising of as many as nineteen teams, the Wildcats play different sports such as basketball, baseball and football to golf and track & field. The teams under the directorship of Lynn W. Thompson show great commitment on field and excel in all the sports.
Bethune Cookman Wildcats is represented a maroon and gold colored lion which serves as their mascot. The vibrant colors rightly reflect the energy and high spirits of the team as well as their desire to win titles for the university. Since inception the Wildcats have earned victories in almost all the games that they play. For baseball it has secured 13 titles, 3 for football, 5 in softball and the list goes on. Recognitions such as Pitcher of the Year, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year also add to the teams' list of credentials.
Being trained by experienced coaches, Bethune Cookman Wildcats are ready to contend their toughest rivals in the upcoming matches. Once again the fields will echo with the song, Let's go Wildcats.
