The BCS Championship is a college football tournament, known fully as the Bowl Championship Series. It was first held in 1998 and has been held annually each year since. It replaced the former Bowl Coalition and Bowl Alliance which were functional during much of the nineties. The reigning BCS Championship winners are the Alabama Crimson Tide who won the 2013 BCS National Championship Game. This championship game is part of a series that acts as a selection system, pitting the ten top teams in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision against each other in five bowl games. The teams that emerge as the top two in these bowl games face each other in the annual BCS National Championship Game. Team rankings are based upon polls, computer selections and games won. The winning team is recognized by the American Football Coaches Association and the winners are declared the best in the country.
The tournament and series of bowl games was created by six conferences; the Big Ten conference, the Atlantic Coast conference, the American conference, the Big 12 conference, the Southeastern conference and the Pacific 12 conference. Three FBS colleges were also involved in the founding, with the first games held in 1998. Before that, bowl games featuring the top two teams had only been held eight times in fifty six long years. The BCS replaced the Bowl Alliance. In 2012 a decision was made to convert the five team’s playoff to a four team playoff format starting the 2014 to 2015 season after which the tournament will be known as the College Football Playoff.
The Ohio State University football team has appeared nine times and won the Sugar Bowl in 1999, Fiesta Bowl in 2003, 2004 and 2006, the Rose Bowl in 2010 and the Sugar Bowl in 2011. Oklahoma won the Orange Bowl in 2001, the Rose Bowl in 2003 and the Fiesta Bowl in 2011. It has the second most appearances in the series, at eight. The University of Southern California has seven appearances and six wins, having won the Orange Bowl in 2003, the Rose Bowl in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The two Florida colleges also have seven appearances and have five and two wins each, respectively.
In 2013, number one ranked team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team faced number two ranked team, the Alabama Crimson Tide. The latter won the game by a 42-14 score to win their record third BCS title. The Louisiana State University football team are in second spot with two wins against their name.
With the Alabama Crimson Tide reigning supreme as three times BCS National Champion it is up to others to catch them . USC hold the record for the most points scored in the game with fifty five they notched up against Oklahoma in 2005. Similarly, Texas hold the record for the most first downs, at thirty, as well as the record for the most rushing yards. Oregon holds the record for the most passing yards with Texas again holding the record for the most total yards.
