She was then signed on by producer Jimmy Buzz and debuted her professional career at the age of twelve on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. She performed a cover of Crazy, a song by Patsy Cline whom she would later play in a musical.
A few years later, Barnett had the opportunity to play Patsy Cline in Always.Patsy Cline, a musical based upon the life of the legendary country music star. This role led to sold out performances and rave reviews all over the nation. She also performed on the cast recording of the musical and was then signed onto Asylum Records. She released a self-titled album that gained her rave reviews in magazines such as Time and Playboy as well as in trade publications. Veteran artists of the American country music industry praised her work with Seymour Stein particularly praising it as leaving him 'spellbound' to this point that she was the first he signed on when he started his label, Sire Records, a part of the Warner Music Group.
