Barclays Churchill Cup
Named in honor of former PM of England, Sir Winston Churchill, Barclays Churchill Cup is an international event, held in alliance of USA Rugby, England Rugby Football Union and Rugby Canada.
The Churchill Cup is the outcome of the alliance that Sir Winston Churchill formed with America and Canada during the World War II. In 2001, England toured to North America, and that tour was later followed by the foundation of the tournament in 2003 in Vancouver.
Since then Barclays Churchill Cup was never held in England until 2007. The event has been sponsored by Barclays since 2006, which is the reason why it is presently named the Barclays Churchill Cup.
Since its very beginning in 2003, the Churchill Cup has been featuring both men's and women's players participating from Canada, England and USA.
Starting from 2005, the invitation men's sides have also participated for the trophy from Ireland A, Scotland A, England, Canada, USA, New Zealand Maori, and Argentina. Last summer the final was played between the New Zealand Maori and Scotland A, in Edmonton, Alberta.
New Zealand Maori defeated Scotland A, are the current reigning champions. In 2005, the Churchill Cup was staged in Edmonton, Alberta and the final was held between England and Argentina, out of which England came to be victorious.
Initially Churchill Cup was the alliance of three nations, but later three more teams, Scotland A, Ireland A and the New Zealand Maori were added as well; hence expanding the tournament to six teams.
The New Zealand participated along with its women's team, Black Ferns, in 2004 for the first time. The same year Maori also won their first trophy as well after defeating England in the finals.
The tournament was further expanded in 2006, and that very same year it was held for the first time in USA as well. One of the two pools was hosted at Santa Clara University in California, while the other one was hosted in Ontario, Canada.
Several upsets in the tournament also followed the same year, when the reigning Churchill Cup Champion, England was defeated by Scotland A, depriving England of its spot in the finals against the New Zealand Maori.
Even after an intense struggle from Scottish side, the New Zealand Maori came out victorious with a 52-17 record. England Saxons were defeated by Ireland A in the Barclays Churchill Cup Plate Final, with a 30 ? 27 win.
While Canada overtook the victory against USA in the Barclays Churchill Cup Bowl Final with a 33 ? 18 win.
The tournament is exclusively broadcasted on Sky Sports and all the nine matches held all across the world are broadcasted on it. In North America, Barclay Churchill Cup is the largest Rugby event that is held in alliance with rugby unions of USA, England and Canada.
The tournament will feature all the six international teams in triple Header of final matches, in the USA leg of the Barclays Churchill Cup, at the Toyota Park in Bridgeview, III. With the final team yet to be confirmed, six teams will be participating in this year's event.
