Abilene Christian University has 15 varsity teams, all of which have turned Wildcats into one of the most successful college athletic programs in the country. Abilene Christian Wildcats’ football team started its play back in 1910 and since then the team has brought home two National Championships. Playing its home games at the Shotwell Stadium, Wildcats’ football team current competes in Division I as a member of Southland Conference. Previously the team played in Division II as a member of the Lone Star Conference. So far, Wildcats have taken twelve overall conference titles with the most recent one in 2012 as a member of Lone Star Conference.
Wildcats’ men’s basketball team has had its fair share of success over the years as well. From 2013-14 season onwards, the team will compete in NCAA Division I. While playing as a member of Lone Star Conference, Abilene Christian Wildcats made nine NCAA Division II tournament appearances. While doing so, the team also won three conference championship titles along the way. Wildcats’ men’s basketball team’s current season is well on its way and this is a wonderful time to catch the team in action on its home court of Moody Coliseum.
Abilene Christian Wildcats baseball team plays its home games at the Crutcher Scott Field and this coming season the team will be going all the way to Olsen Field to face Texas A&M Aggies in an away game. Wildcats’ baseball team has had its shining moments in history as well. The team has won seven conference titles and the most recent one came in 2010. Apart from that the team is also known for producing star players. Since the beginning of the MLB draft in 1965, Wildcats has had its eight players selected in MLB Draft.
Wildcats’ men’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams are by far the most successful athletic programs at the university. Wildcats’ men’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams have claimed a combined twenty eight national championships along with twenty six conference titles. Other athletic programs at the university are also talented; showcasing the best of what the college sports have to offer. After moving to the Division I in 2013, all of the teams will be facing even fiercer competition. Tougher opponents would mean more exciting games and more worth to each penny spent.
