Historically, the ACC is amongst the most successful conferences in men's basketball. The two men Everett Case and Frank McGuire began the ACC basketball. The ACC Men's Basketball Tournament is an annual conference championship tournament in basketball for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The conference champion receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

The 1955 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was held in Raleigh, North Carolina. NC State won the championship defeating Duke 87-77. Ronnie Shavlik was named tournament MVP. North Carolina State coach Everett Case had been a successful high school coach in Indiana. Case is also known as the father of ACC basketball. He ironically accepted the Wolfpack's head coaching job when the school decided to focus on competing in football with Duke University.

Case's North Carolina State teams rose to prominence in the early years of the ACC with a modern, fast-paced style of play. Despite his success on the court, Case may have been even a better promoter off the court. Realizing the need to sell his program and university, he organized the funding and construction of Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh as the new home court for his team.

Reynolds, being the largest on-campus arena in America, used as the host site for many Southern Conference Tournaments, ACC Tournaments, and the Dixie Classic. At North Carolina, Frank McGuire was appointed as the men's basketball coach to counter the dominant success of Case's program. Both men realized the pros of a rivalry between them. It garnered more national attention to both of their programs and increased fan support on both sides.

In 1957, when McGuire's North Carolina team won the national championship, an entrepreneur from Greensboro named Castleman D. Chesley noticed the popularity it gained. He developed a five-station television network which would begin broadcasting regular season ACC games the next season. From that time onwards, ACC basketball generated immense popularity.

Charlotte hosted Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in 1990 and 2000 in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Charlotte Coliseum. Georgia Tech won the tournament 2000 whereas Brian Oliver, was declared tournament MVP. The 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was held in 2005 in Washington, District of Columbia at the MCI Center. Duke won the title, defeating Georgia Tech in the championship game. J.J. Redick received the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.

The 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was held from March 13 ?16, 2008. Charlotte, North Carolina hosted the tournament at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena which was broadcasted on the ESPN family of networks, along with Raycom Sports in the ACC footprint. Florida State and Miami dominated their first round games for the second year in a row. Miami became the first #5 seed to dominate the ACC tournament game since the conference expanded to 12 teams. The #12 seed pulled off the upset for the past two seasons.

North Carolina was declared the tournament championship and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina received the tournament most valuable player award.
