Stanford Cardinal
The Stanford Cardinal is the moniker of the athletic teams at Stanford University.

Nickname and mascot history
Following its win over Cal in the first-ever Big Game in 1892, cardinal color was picked for the Stanford's athletic teams. White was adopted as a secondary color in the 1940s.

In 1930, the athletic department approved the mascot "Indians." President Richard Lyman later dropped the Indian symbol and name in 1972, after objections from Native American students and a vote by the student senate.

Cardinals was the official nickname from 1972 to 1981. Despite the plural form of the name, it was planned to refer to the color, not the bird. During the 1970s, a number of possible nicknames were suggested: Robber Barons (Leland Stanford's history), Barrons, Sequoias, Trees, Railroaders, Spikes, Huns, Steaming Manhole Covers, and Griffins. The last suggestion gained enough momentum to the university to move two griffin statues to be near the athletic facilities.

On November 17, 1981, school President Donald Kennedy declared that the athletic teams is represented by the color Cardinal in its singular form.

Stanford has no official mascot, but the Stanford Tree, a member of the Stanford Band wearing a self-designed tree costume, appears at major Stanford sports events. The Tree is based upon El Palo Alto, a redwood tree in neighboring Palo Alto that appears in the Stanford seal and athletics logo.

National championships

Through the fall 2006 sports season, Stanford has won 105 national championships. Of these, 93 are NCAA team championships, second most among all universities. Of the 93 championships, 57 are in men's sports and 36 are in women's sports, the most of any university.

Stanford has won the NACDA Director's Cup, awarded annually to the colleges or university with the most success in idealistic athletics, for 12 straight years (1994-95 to 2005-06).

Olympics representation
Stanford athletes have traditionally been represented at the Olympics. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, Stanford sent 41 current or former student athletes: 33 competed for the United States, seven competed for other countries, and one was a coach for the United States. Stanford also sent two of its coaches as Olympic coaches.

The Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame was established on December 21, 1954. The brainchild of Walt Gamage, sports editor of the now-defunct Palo Alto Times, the first class of inductees consisted of 34 Stanford sports greats. New members are introduced annually and are recognized during halftime of a home Stanford football game.

Over the years, College sports have started to grasp more attention of the viewers than they ever did before. Encounters between the college teams have now started taking national attention, and are also broadcasted on television nationwide. College sports have taken mainstream exposure thanks to competitive teams like Stanford Cardinal. Cardinal represents Stanford University in thirty one different athletic programs. The Cardinals play as the members of Pacific 12 Conference of NCAA Division I.

Stanford Cardinal is ranked on the second spot for winning the most amounts of National Championships than any other college athletic program. They're one spot behind UCLA with 115 national championships to their name. Hundred and one championships out of these are NCAA team championships. With 421 championships, Stanford Cardinal holds the top spot for most NCAA individual sport titles. In addition to that, Stanford Cardinal has also won the NACDA Director's Cup for Division for sixteen consecutive years. The cup is awarded every year to the college that meets with most amount of success. Stanford Cardinals men's athletic programs have claimed a total of sixty one NCAA Championships, while their women's athletic programs have won forty.
