The Penn State Nittany Lions (men) and the Lady Lions are Pennsylvania State University athletic teams. Not surprisingly, their school mascot is the Nittany Lion. Penn State takes part in the NCAA Division I-A. It also participates in the Big Ten Conference.

The Penn State All-Sports Museum is a museum that honors all Penn State Nittany Lion athletes. It is near Gate B of the Beaver Stadium. Its upper level is in honor to indoor sports while the lower one is dedicated to outdoor sports.

The football display on the lower level is dedicated to the well-known Penn State football team, Penn State Cheerleading, the Penn State Blue Band, as well as the student athletes, particularly those who have portrayed the Nittany Lion mascot.

The coach at this school, Joe Paterno, has been in charge of the Nittany Lion football team since 1966. There is no doubt why he is said to be one of the most successful and venerable national coaches. Penn State participates in two football "trophy games" along with other members of the Big Ten. Penn State has several noteworthy sporting achievements. The school has a rich background of both men's and women's volleyball success. In 1994, Penn State emerged as the first team outside California to win a NCAA Division I National Championship in men's volleyball. In 16 years, the Penn State's women's volleyball team has also won 10 Big Ten Conference championships. These victories encompass the 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 titles.

Penn State is also known as a fencing powerhouse, as it has won a record 10 national fencing championships since the NCAA started awarding titles [1990]. This team is known for finishing in 1st or 2nd place in every season, apart from 2005 when they had to settle for 3rd place. Along with the fencing squads, their coach, Emmanuil G. Kaidanov, is also highly regarded. The women's soccer team is known to be particularly strong. Its program has succeeded in winning nine consecutive Big Ten Championships.

Rec Hall, the football team, performs at the Beaver Stadium. Both, the men's and women's basketball teams perform at the Bryce Jordan Center. Majority of the other indoor teams perform at Rec Hall. The Rec Hall used to be the home for basketball teams as well.

A new baseball stadium has been erected and inaugurated in June 2006. Also, the university has the Penn State Golf Courses. It has 2 courses for the golf teams, students, faculty, as well as the general public. The Stone Valley Recreation Area is operated by the Intercollegiate Athletics Department. This is located 20 miles southeast of State College.
