The idea of having such a festival in Portland was presented to the public in 1905 by Mayor Harry Lane. Today, this flower festival is probably the largest celebration marking summer season and attracts around 500,000 spectators which make it the grandest flower festival of Northwest.
The attractions offered by the festival include a range of things. There's music, races, games, parades and a lot of fun for all age groups. Among the most sought after events of the festival is Milk Carton Boat Race, Rock 'n' Roll Portland Half Marathon, Rose Cup Races, Dragon Boat Race, Queen's Coronation, Rose Show, Starlight Run and lastly the RoZOne with an amazing line-up that makes this rose festival even more colorful and exciting.
The first ever parade held in Oregon was called the Rose Carnival which was later named the Rose Festival Parade. Today it is the largest spectator event of Portland, thus called the Grand Floral Parade which attracts more than five hundred thousand spectators who stand there, lining the route from Memorial Coliseum to downtown Portland. The three special sections of the 2013 Grand Floral Parade include Celebrate Oregon, Celebrate Service and Celebrate Cultures.
Among other parades that are a part of the Portland Rose Festival are Junior Parade and Starlight Parade which was also a part of the first Rose Festival in 1907. The 2013 Junior Parade featuring the lovely Fred Bear and other mascots like Benny the OSU Beaver, GEICO Gecko and the Rose Festival Clown Prince, was named as the Fred Meyer Junior Parade. With 32 bands from Portland, dance teams and baton twirlers it was a fun filled event and is going to be even more exciting in the upcoming season. Every year, this parade involves more than ten thousand kids who come from around 23 different schools, making it the oldest and the largest kid's parade.

This parade provides families with a funky and eclectic way to have fun amid fireworks, illuminated floats, glowing umbrellas and much more. The event is attended by over 250,000 people who come to downtown Portland to watch the night sky lit up, providing a sparkling spectacle.
