The history of sports in North America dates back to the times of the Native Americans. They used to play a different version of some of the popular sports of today. Those were just a few contests but the more elaborate and organized competitions started in the late 19th century after schools and colleges initiated balanced programs to encourage athletics. With the popularity of TV in the latter half of twentieth century, more Americans watched sports on television turning the sports industry into a massive business.
