Born in 1986 in Abington, Pennsylvania, ZZ joined her first band at the age of twelve. According to the artist, the first song she sang was Albert King’s ‘As the Years Go Passing By’. After moving to Los Angeles, ZZ signed a contract with the Boardwalk Entertainment Group and began working on her debut album. She worked with eminent musicians like Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Pete Rock and Kendrick Lamar. Her first EP included a sampled beat from Freddie Gibb’s ‘Oil Money’. Freddie was impressed by the remake and offered to contribute guest vocals on ZZ’s version.
ZZ’s debut EP, ‘Criminal’, was released in May 2012. The EP comprised of hit track ‘Til The Casket Drops’ that gained popularity after appearing in the third season of TV show, ‘Pretty Little Liars’, on the ABC Family Network. Other popular songs from the EP included ‘Criminal’, ‘Move Like U Stole It’ and ‘Put the Gun Down’.
During October 2012, ZZ Ward released her debt studio album ‘Til the Casket Drops’. Featuring re-mastered versions of hit tracks from her EP, the album garnered critical as well as commercial success. Some of the new tracks in the album were ‘Charlie Ain’t Home’, ‘Last Love Song’, ‘Save My Life’ and ‘Blue Eyed Blind’. After the successful release of the studio album, ZZ was invited to perform her album’s first single ‘Put the Gun Down’ on Conan, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Big Morning Buzz with Carrie Keagen. Her live performances stole millions of hearts and the artist was compared to distinguished musicians like Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner by the New York Times. ‘Put the Gun Down’ also charted at Top 40 position on the Billboard Alternative chart and landed at Top 10 position on the AAA Radio chart. Her second single ‘365 Days’ also did well with the fans. ZZ was seen performing ‘365 Days’ on the Big Radio Morning Buzz Live as well as Good Morning America.
Apart from an EP and a studio album, ZZ Ward has also released a free Mixtape, ‘Eleven Roses’, featuring original songs like ‘Morphine’, ‘Cinnamon Stix’, ‘Got It Bad’ and ‘Better Off Dead’. She also released a Vinyl record ‘Grinnin In Your Face’ as a Record Store Day exclusive in April 2013 featuring tracks, ‘Everybody Wants to be Famous’ and ‘Grinning In Your Face’.
