Yusuf Islam, more commonly known by his previous stage name, Cat Stevens, is a renowned British musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, education philanthropist and a humanitarian. Starting his career in 1965, he performed in the psychedelic rock, folk rock, pop rock, synthpop, electro and soft rock genres.
In 1977, he converted to Islam and focused on discovering spirituality. He went on a hiatus from music till 1995. Now the musician is back with a bang and is all set to tour the US. If you are a fan of his, then this is the ideal time for you to book your Yusuf Islam tickets.
The famous musician, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, is not only a vocalist, but a guitarist, mandolin player, pianist, organ player, percussionist, synthesizer, double bassist and also plays the mellotron. His albums, Tea for the Tillerman (1970) and Teaser and the Firecat (1971) were both certified triple platinum by the RIAA.
In 1972 he released another record, Catch Bull at Four. This album went on to sell half a million copies in the first two weeks of its release. The album ranked as Billboard's number one LP record for three successive weeks.
Islam won two prestigious ASCAP Song Writing Awards for the super hit single, "The First Cut Is the Deepest." This notable song has been covered by various well known artists. A few of his other popular hit songs are, "Morning Has Broken," "MoonShadow," "Father and Son," "Peace Train," and "Wild World."
After his conversion to Islam, Stevens adopted a new name and auctioned his guitars for charity. His reason for leaving music was to gain more spirituality and he also decided to dedicate himself to humanitarian, educational and philanthropic causes. For his prominent work as a charity role player, he has been given various accolades and awards including the Man of Peace Award in 2004, World Award in 2003, and Mediterranean Prize for Peace in 2007.
In 2006, he made a comeback to the world of music by releasing his album An Other Cup after 28 years. On the 5th of May 2009, his follow-up album, Roadsinger, came out. In support of the album, Islam toured extensively in Europe and the US.
It was in 1968, that he embarked on the quest to find inner reflection. Due to the heavy work load of extensive touring, appearing on television for interviews and generally living the high life of a celebrated music icon, Islam fell ill. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis. It was during this time that he began the process of meditation and questioning the meaning of life.
After a complete recovery, with a new found perspective about life, his music transformation began to take place. During this time he wrote about 40 songs and evaluated his personal life. The lyrics that he started to write became more intuitive and subtle.
While he continued his journey to find the meaning of life, his music career was gaining prominence simultaneously. However, in 1975, he stumbled upon yet another life altering moment. In an accident, he nearly drowned while swimming in the Pacific Ocean in Malibu. His perception towards spirituality heightened after being saved from the incident.
For the next three decades, he spent his life accomplishing charitable and humanitarian goals. However, he re-embraced music with the release of his album, An Other Cup, which came out in 2006. Three years later, in 2009 he released his album Roadsinger. The release of this album was followed by a tour, "Guess I'll Take My Time Tour," to UK, Europe and Australia.
For his impact on and services to music, Islam was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014. He has recently completed a new album, Tell 'Em I'm Gone, which is yet to be released. The album features other renowned artists like Richard Thompson, Matt Sweeney, Charlie Musselwhite, Rick Rubin and many others. To catch him live in concert, get your Yusuf Islam tickets now.
