Born in 1941 on the "Piano Island" of Gulangyu in China, Yin Chengzong is a Chinese pianist and composer. He was somewhat a child prodigy appearing for recitals in local church at an age of nine years. When he was twelve, he entered one of the country's most prestigious music schools, the Shanghai Conservatory. He earned his bachelor's from Central Conservatory in Beijing. In 1959, he won an award at World Youth Peace and Friendship Festival in Austria. In 1962, he, along with the pianist Susan Starr, got second place in International Tchaikovsky Competition. In 1965, he started his professional music career and joined China's Central Symphony Orchestra as a soloist. Since then, he never looked back and over the years proved himself as one of the greatest musicians of his generation.
In 1967, during the Cultural Revolution when Western classical music was forbidden, Yin carried his piano to the middle of Tiananmen Square and played revolutionary songs, operas and classical Chinese music. His contributions are considered significant and heroic in saving piano from destruction.
He made his American debut in 1983 from Carnegie Hall in New York City and has performed there seven times till now. He has also performed with Philadelphia Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Malcolm Sargent. His recent engagements include performances in Beijing's National Centre for Performing Arts and solo recitals in Toronto, San Francisco, Boston and Washington D.C.
Yin Chengzong is best known for his Yellow River Piano Concerto he has performed more than one thousand times all around the world. His recording is broadcasted and performed each year in more than fifty countries. Based on Xian Xinghai's Yellow River Cantata, he created this concerto along with other members of a special committee. The arrangement features heavy influences of Chinese folk melodies with western instruments, pianos and orchestras. Yin's recording also received a Platinum award and the concerto remains one of the most popular compositions all around the world.
Yin has released over thirty albums so far. Some of his most famous works include all-Chopin, Debussy's Preludes and Yellow River Concerto. His solo performances were featured on CBS Sunday Morning and China Central Television.
