Asia's latest music sensation has danced its way into American hearts. Riding high on the commercial success of the "Korean Wave", South Korean girl group Wonder Girls has taken the pop industry by storm in recent weeks. Their manager & producer Park Jin Young was the only Asian act to have pulled off a proper crossover to the American market prior to the invasion by Korea's favorite "little sisters". The impact of their bubblegum pop has been of colossal proportions. Wonder Girls are composed of Sun Ye, Ye Eun, So Hee, Yubin & Hye Rim. The group's boundless energy on stage coupled with killer dance moves has created an unabating craze amongst the delirious fans. Arriving in the American market with a license to thrill, Wonder Girls have broken through with "Nobody", & other projects & performances are in the pipeline.
The Wonder Girls band concept was actually based on an MTV show called MTV Wonder Girls. The first four episodes highlighted the scheduling & lives of four original members of the band, before Ye Eun joined them to complete the set. The lineup at the time contained current 4minute superstar Hyuna, whose stunning dance moves at the showcase in MTV Studio made people stand up & take notice, as other members crooned delightfully to original compositions & covers of Janet Jackson & Destiny's Child. It was the perfect stepping stone, & Wonder Girls made the most of the upsurge in popularity with the release of the mini-album The Wonder Begins. The response was staggering. Contracted to JYP Entertainment (established by Park Jin Young), The Wonder Years was released as their first full-length album in September 2007. It was a massive success, yet Wonder Girls were robbed of the chance to tour extensively due to many unforeseen health maladies. One of these, a bout of chronic gastroenteritis & fainting spells, caused the withdrawal of Hyuna prior to the album's release. Yubin replaced Hyuna, fresh from the talent hunt of Good Entertainment, & quickly gelled in with the team. Running riot all across Asia, the album had Wonder Girls scooping up awards & even landing a reality TV show, The Wonder Life. Wonder Girls released some chart-topping singles thereafter, returning to the summit again, & touring extensively. Then came the big crossover to America's booming music industry with "Nobody". The hot single whipped up a dance craze as Wonder Girls found the American public surprisingly conducive to K-pop. Upon advent in the US, the Wonder Girls are co-managed by JYP & Jonas Entertainment.
"Irony" & "A Sorry Heart" were some of the original Wonder Girls compositions that the band played in their first MTV showcase. The dance moves received widespread appreciation. The first single off the debut album, "Tell Me", became a smash hit on Asian charts, winning plaudits for its upbeat feel. The spunk characterized by the sizzling single "So Hot" propelled the Wonder Girls to the top of the charts again. "This Time" & "You're Out" also gained massive popularity. But no assault at the summit was complete without a foray into the demanding American industry, a feat accomplished by "Nobody". The single became Korea's first to enter the Billboard Hot 100, reaching a highest of #76, & ensured the Wonder Girls established a foothold in America. In 2008, the Wonder Girls won two Daesang Awards for Best Newcomers. They have also won numerous Golden Disk & Mnet KM Music Awards.
The Wonder Girls started off with bustling, captivating dance moves that thrilled audiences. The rapping by Yubin on some tracks, especially the newer version of "Tell Me" has added a higher intensity & maturity, but the funky beats are still alive. Wonder Girls sure know how to kick up a show, as evidenced by the sellout performances when they shared the stage with the Jonas Brothers in the American leg of their tour. Currently working on their first English album (containing 6 English tracks), Wonder Girls have struck a deal with Sony Ericsson as brand ambassadors & will undertake a tour of over 10 US cities to promote the band.
If anybody was in need of proof for the world's changing status to a veritable global village, then Wonder Girls provide just that. The brand of music is revitalizing, with red-hot dance moves & that inimitable "cute" outlook. Wonder Girls have broken barriers with their crossover, giving fans reason to expect more. One may not need any further reason to join queues for Wonder Girls tickets.
