A new feel and appeal to the sounds of hard rock and heavy metal has already made Wolfmother one best contenders of becoming the next worldwide music sensation. Just two albums old, this Australian music act is all set to conquer new territories with its wonderful sound and rocking style. The current lineup of Wolfmother includes Andrew Stockdale on vocals and guitars, Dave Atkins on drums, Aidan Nemeth on rhythm guitar, and Ian Peres on bass, keyboards, backing vocals; the last two being the fresh ones to join the group.
Formed in Erskineville, Sydney in 2000, Wolfmother initially hit bull's eye with their energetic live performances. Even today, when their albums sales are sky-high; the band is more known for its concert and tours in various regions. When started, it comprised of Chris Ross and Myles Heskett who later left the band in 2008. Wolfmother started off by jamming at local clubs and small venues. Before 2004, the band was missing from the public spotlight. However, things got better when Australian record label Modular Recordings signed them later that year and the band started working on an album besides playing at various venues.
Wolfmother's debut EP was a decent success and reached thirty-five in the ARIA Singles Chart. It also got them more recognition on the road, and the band continued its nonstop Australian and overseas touring routine for 6 months. However, this was not enough to hit it big with the international audience. Hence, the band moved to Los Angeles in 2005, enlists the help of professionals of the field and finally recorded its first full-length album in the Sound City.
Mind's Eye/Woman was the first single that came out from Wolfmother's debut album. Released in Australia in October 2005, the album peaked at number three on the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Charts. The album remained on the charts for nearly two years and certified as 5x Platinum, making Wolfmother one of the hottest music sensations in their country.
Besides good sales, Wolfmother's debut album managed to get thumps up from the critics also. It won many awards including the prestigious Grammy. They won it for the single, Woman that was declared the Best Hard Rock Performance in 2007 Grammy Awards. The album also got J Award in 2005 and two ARIA Awards in 2006 for Best Breakthrough Album and Best Rock Album.
The success of their debut album has earned Wolfmother the right kind of recognition and exposure in the industry. However, it took them four years to come up with another record. They maintained a regular presence on concert front during these times, except the nine month break from touring in 2008. Later that year, Myles Heskett and Chris Ross said goodbye to group and they were replaced by Aidan Nemeth and Ian Peres.
Cosmic Egg, released in 2009, further raised the stature of Wolfmother as one of the hottest rock bands going around. The album contained a dose of Zeppelin-esque classic rock, and grabs your attention right from the first song till the last. Back Round, California Queen and New Moon Rising became instant hits and party-ready hits of the season.
One of the most remarkable achievements of Wolfmother is that they have managed to get widespread recognition in USA, UK and Europe besides their homeland Australia.
