It was in the dreadful snowy winter of February in Iowa, when a private jet carrying three rock legends crashed mainly due to the snowy weather conditions and partly due to the error of the pilot, Roger Peterson. There were no survivors from the accident and the site of the crash near the Clear Lake has been transformed into a concrete monument, visited by hundreds of fans throughout the year. Before the accident, Buddy Holly left his previous band named “The Crickets” and established his own band that consisted of members , Tommy Allsup, Waylon Jennings and Carl Bunch. The year that this collective was assembled, it was called to perform at the Winter Dance Party Tour. Valens and Richardson were also invited to perform at the tour. During the tour, poor management and the severe cold led to many artists falling ill while others became frustrated as a result of the bad quality of the buses used for travelling. Due to this Holly decided to charter a plane to travel from Clear Lake to Minnesota, where the tour was heading to next.
Though Holly and two of the other members of his band were supposed to travel on that plane, Jennings’ switched his seat with Richardson who was not well and wanted to escape from the cold, while Valens won Allsup’s seat after a coin toss. Another last minute drop out of the flight included the artist Dion DiMucci. Soon after take off the plane went missing and its wreckage was found the day after in a corn field just six miles away from where the plane had taken off. The singer Don McLean wrote a song paying homage to the artists who went down in the fall, known as “American Pie”. Though the song was officially named “American Pie”, it later on became known as “The Day the Music Died”, which refers to the deaths of rock and roll legends. If you are a fan of the deceased artists, then you should be sure to attend the Winter Dance Party event.
This event came forth in the year 1999, exactly on the fortieth anniversary of the original tour in which the aviation accident occurred. The Winter Dance Party show is the only event that is sponsored by Valens, Holly and Richardson Estates. The show goes on for a mind blowing two hours, in which the greatest hits of these artists from the fifties are performed on stage. Fans can listen to songs like “Peggy Sue”, “That’ll Be the Day”, “Rave On”, “Oh, Boy”, “La Bamba”, and “Chantilly Lace”, just to name a few.
In the show, Richardson’s place is taken by his very own son, Jay P. Richardson Jr. who performs the biggest hits of his father. Buddy Holly’s songs are sung by John Mueller, the infamous star of the Broadway musical “The Buddy Holly Story”, that has been able to earn him much deserved appreciation from the fans. Ray Anthony, a renowned Las Vegas star who is known to perform at the “Legends of Rock and Roll”, takes Valen’s place. Apart from these three singers performing the hits, a four-piece band provides the music for the songs. This band consists of George Mueller who plays the guitar, Sammy K playing the drums, Ed Maxwell on bass and lastly the Grammy winner, Mike Acosta, providing his saxophone expertise.
