Virginia Waring International Piano Competition is a biennial event that takes place in Palm Desert, California. Showcasing upcoming talent, the competition has successfully been held for over three decades. The venue of the event stayed the College of the Dessert till 2005. In order to accommodate a bigger number of people the competition was moved to the Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino. The competition is open to all nationalities and is divided in categories according to age groups. For the final competition twenty five applicants are chosen from the hundreds of applicants. These are narrowed down by the selection committee who reach this decision after listening to audition CDs. The final winner is decided after further rounds which are presided over by a jury.

Age twelve and under are grouped in juniors. While thirteen to seventeen year old compete at the Intermediate level. The final category is that of seniors which comprises of participants aged between eighteen and thirty five. The winners are given cash prizes and are also helped in building their musical career. This is achieved by getting the winners concert and recitals dates all over the country and also across Europe. Additionally scholarships are also awarded to the winners.
 
The competition features a variety of performances. These include concerto rounds, solo performances and master classes by all three categories. There is also a special performance in the senior category which is dedicated to compositions by the renowned Austrian musician Ernst Krenek.
